The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program (IALP) Class of 2012 participants traveled to Chicago for an intensive 3-day seminar on “Economics & the Marketplace” at the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business. The session also included briefings at the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the CME Group.
Over a two-year period the group is attending 14 seminars covering current social, political and economic issues in the agriculture industry. Over the course of three days participants learned the intensive research and critical thinking research process that precedes the formation of state and national policy. Participants visited the floor of the worlds leading commodity trading marketplace at the CME.
Presentations were given by representatives of the Federal Reserve, CBOE President William Brodsky, University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business Dean Sunil Kumar and others, and the group toured the CME Globex Command Center of electronic trading.

“It’s critical that our future policy and decision makers better comprehend the scope and complexities of economic policy as it relates to agricultural issues,” said Joyce Watson, IALF President. “Participants have improved their awareness and knowledge of financing, currency, and the business culture.”
The “Economics & the Marketplace” seminar is sponsored by Richard Ryan, a consultant in the agricultural and seed industry and retired executive with DEKALB Genetics Corporation in DeKalb, Illinois and Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Ryan is a member of the IALF Board of Directors.
