One of the best parts of traveling overseas is when you first come out of the airport and you start to adjust to all the new sites and sounds. From the signs you can’t read, to the way the locals dress to the amazing smells coming from the little bakery on the corner. The IALF class of 2014 has started the International Study Seminar in Germany with a smooth beginning. However, this feat is actually a small miracle since Alison and Don had to totally modify the travel plans when the original destination of Russia and Ukraine had to be cancelled due to the ever increasing tensions in Kiev and Crimea.
We were thankful to be able to check in early at the hotel so we could spend some time exploring Wiesbaden in the afternoon before heading to the Schloss Johannisberg Winery for a tour, wine tasting, and dinner. Our guide also gave a great history lesson related to winemaking in the area —for example, the winery was part of one of the local monasteries until the early 1800’s, they still give 10% of the annual harvest to the Hapsburg family, and they can produce about 1 1/2 bottles of wine per plant.
The evening ended with an exceptional dinner near the banks of the Rhine and a very quiet bus ride back to the hotel.
